History of Adventure Club
Adventure Club is the brainchild of Kevin, though its ultimate realization has been the work of many. That original idea came from a friend. This friend was training for a new job that required her to travel. After each day’s work, her co-workers would say, “Hey, let’s go get some drinks!” Dismayed, the friend would say something like, “Isn’t there anything else we can do that doesn’t involve drinking in a smoky bar? You know, go see the architecture, go to a museum, something like that?” Her co-workers looked at her blankly, and went out to get drinks.
That friend came home and told this story to Kevin, who was finishing graduate school. This idea percolated in Kevin’s head until, as the year 2000 dawned, he introduced Adventure Club. The basic tenets were:
- monthly events where friends would get together to learn, have the fun of each other, and explore the world
- different hosts, so each person could bring their own knowledge and interests to the group
- in general, events and activities should be free
- the entire entity would be organic …growing and changing over time as the group changed and learned
And so it began, in February of 2000 with the first Adventure Club, hosted by Kevin. Four intrepid folks went hiking in the icy and pine scented wilds of the White House Ranch, and a great tradition was born. Minka hosted the second Adventure Club, to a train museum, and it has only gotten better since.
In general, the Adventure Club calendar runs from September through June. Some traditions have come up, and generally happen the same time each year, like the Adventure Club Movie, and the Adventure Club Interpretive Christmas. Different people host, different adventures take place. They’ve all been grand.
Recently, Kevin visited a friend in California. The friend and his girlfriend, hearing about Adventure Club, thought it would be a great idea to share, to create Adventure Club cells across the nation. So, the members of Adventure Club took them seriously, and created a web site and starter kit. Adventure Club is ready to spawn, and get more and more people having more and more adventures around the world.
